Russian Klezmer Night

Russian Sensation Coming to Los Al

By Dora Lieberman

Virtuoso clarinetist LEO CHELYAPOV , Klezmer sensation from Russia, will be performing at Chabad in Los Alamitos on Dec. 17th at 7pm. The event will be in Russian, but, all are welcome.

Chelyapov graduated from the Moscow College of Musical Arts and emigrated to Hollywood in 1992. Since that time he has taken America by storm with his infusion of pure, traditional Jewish folk music into the fabric of American popular culture. Chelyapov performed with the popular rock bands like The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The event is being called "An Evening for Russian Jews," since Chabad, a Jewish social and educational organization with branches in cities around the world including Los Alamitos, began in a small Russian town called "Lubavitch."

While the Los Alamitos appearance will be relatively small for Chelyapov, as he has been featured on Late Night with David Letterman, MTV, and at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Leo Chelyapov is a Russian Jew at heart and he says "This event will be for my people and I plan to talk about the music in my native Russian."

Chabad of Los Alamitos has been serving the local Jewish community since 1986 with Jewish services and outreach programs including the popular Hebrew High and Jewish Clubs in Public Schools, but this will be the first event to service Russian speaking Jews in the area. Tickets are $20. Co-sponsors are $180 (includes 2 tickets plus signed CD).

RSVP early as seating is limited by calling 714-828-1851 or click here for more information.
